Questions & answers
Do my friends need the app?
No. One tap sends a picture of the split plus a short text version through any messaging app. Each friend sees their total, their dishes, and their share of tax and tip. They’d only need Split & Settle to join a live shared bill through iCloud.
Is it really free?
Yes. Splitting is free with no limits: unlimited bills, receipt scanning, splitting by item, sending the split, settle-up with payment links, iCloud sync and shared bills, the calculator, and one trip. No ads, ever.
What’s in Split & Settle Pro?
Pro is $9.99 once — not a subscription. It adds unlimited trips, companies, Reports and the accounting export. Family Sharing is included.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open Settings → Split & Settle Pro → Restore. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple Account you bought with. Family Sharing members get Pro too.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Receipts are read entirely on your phone. Your bills live on your phone and, if you turn it on, in your own iCloud — we can’t see them. There’s no account, no ads and no tracking. See the privacy policy.
Can it read the signed slip and the itemized receipt together?
Yes. Add the signed slip as a second photo and the itemized receipt and the slip are read together.
It read a line wrong. What now?
Anything it isn’t sure about is flagged so you can check it quickly, and you can correct any line before you split. When you correct a restaurant’s odd label, it learns it for next time.
Can it handle shared dishes?
Yes. Tap every person who shared a dish and it splits automatically — in halves, thirds, or however many people tapped in. Tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person ordered.
What are the ways to split?
Evenly, by percentage, custom amounts (across subtotal, tax, tip and total columns), or by item. There’s also an “everyone paid their own” mode.
How do tips work?
Tip as a percent or a dollar amount, before or after tax, and round the total up or down. Set a standing tip preference and it applies automatically. It also remembers what’s customary per currency — no tip by default in places like Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
Where does the sales tax rate come from?
Pick the restaurant from Apple Maps and the local rate is filled in. Your own rate always wins — just type over it.
Does it work in other currencies?
Yes. Enter bills in practically any currency, with the exchange rate locked in when you enter it. The built-in calculator and currency converter can even start a bill for you.
How do I settle up?
Open Owed to You to see what each friend owes, netted across every bill. Request with a Venmo, Cash App or PayPal link, send a friendly reminder, and mark it settled in one tap. Payment links simply open those apps — Split & Settle never handles money.
How do shared bills and trips work?
Share a bill or a whole trip through iCloud and everyone you invite sees the same bill and who’s paid. You can also send a snapshot copy instead.
Can I track business meals?
Yes. Mark a meal as a business expense with its purpose and attendees, file bills by company, and see yearly and quarterly totals in Reports. Export for spreadsheets, QuickBooks Online (CSV) or QuickBooks Desktop (IIF). Companies, Reports and export are part of Pro. Split & Settle isn’t tax advice — check the rules that apply to you.
How do I back up my bills?
Turn on iCloud to keep your bills in your own iCloud, and you can back up and restore to a file anytime.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet — Split & Settle is iPhone only for now and requires iOS 17 or later. Friends on Android still get the picture and the text.

Troubleshooting
Getting a clean scan
- Lay the receipt flat and smooth out folds.
- Find good, even light — avoid harsh shadows and glare.
- Get the whole receipt in the frame, top to bottom.
- Add the signed slip as a second photo — both are read together.
- Long receipt? A PDF or a photo from your library works too.
iCloud sync & shared bills
- Make sure you’re signed into iCloud in the iPhone Settings app.
- Check that iCloud is allowed for Split & Settle and your iCloud storage isn’t full.
- Everyone joining a shared bill or trip needs Split & Settle and their own iCloud account.
- Give it a moment on a slow connection — changes sync in the background.
Restoring Split & Settle Pro
- Go to Settings → Split & Settle Pro → Restore.
- Use the same Apple Account you bought with.
- Family Sharing members: make sure purchase sharing is turned on for your family.
